Formal is the tenth (assuming left to right) skill in the Dutch language tree. In this lesson, the learner of Dutch is fully introduced to the Dutch system of formality.

Tips and notesEdit

It is a common mistake among Dutch people to capitalize "u." This is not technically correct; the only time you would capitalize it would be if you are addressing a deity. Implying someone's a deity might be taking it too far.

Lesson 1Edit

  • u = you (formal)
  • uw = your (formal)
  • alstublieft = please
  • meneer = Mr.
  • mevrouw = Mrs./Ms.
