The advantages of receiving Duolingo Notifications as emails are many:

  • Receive more than 5 notifications at a time!
  • No on-site Sticky Note function? No problem! Use your email's search bar! Keywords and/or usernames locate specific Discussions you've followed (so long as at least one other person has commented after you).
  • Reference specific events for a more effective visit to the Troubleshooting Forum.
  • Keep a record of events in case of a dispute (hopefully, you won't be involved in a dispute!).

Here are the current (as of 10 January 2016) notifications you can choose from:

  • There is an announcement
  • Somebody friends you
  • Somebody passes you
  • Somebody responds to a discussion you're following
  • Someone posts on your stream
  • Someone edits a sentence you have translated

Filtering email notifications[]

Want to keep your Duolingo notifications separate from your other email? If you have a Gmail (or Yahoo!) account, you can create a folder into which your email provider automatically filters all of your Duolingo notifications. (In fact, most email providers offer filters!)

Gmail[]

Steps 1-3: Creating the Filter[]

To set up your own folder for notifications, follow these directions:

  1. Click: Manage Labels
  2. Click: Filters
  3. Click: Create New Filter

Step 4: Directing Your Filter[]

4. Fill in From with: no-reply@duolingo.com
  • Please note, this is a basic filter only. Messages coming from any other Duolingo source will still enter your Inbox. For example, if you file a report through "the white Support button on the left", your ticket number will come from support@duolingo.com which will go to your Inbox. (Also, any direct emails from Duolingo Staff etc. will also go to your Inbox.) If you want to receive them in the same folder as your notifications, you will have to add their email addresses to the From line. Separate email addresses with a comma. (For example, support@duolingo.com, [Staff contact details]@duolingo.com, etc.)

Step 5 Finding Your Completed Filter[]

5. Your folder is finished! See Image 3 for location.

Yahoo Mail[]

Once you're signed into Yahoo Mail, go to the gear icon, select Settings, then Filters. Fill it out the same way as you would in Step 4 (Directing Your Filter) of the instructions for Gmail.
