Verbs: Gerund is the hundred-eighteenth (assuming read left to right) skill in the language tree for French. In the three lessons of this skill, you will learn all about gerunds, which are the -ing forms of verbs in English.

Grammar Notes[]

The gerund in French has a large variety of uses, and only a few of them are taught in this course. Most notably, it is used when one action is happening at the same time as another action or to describe the manner in which something is done:

  • Il a travaillé avec les enfants tout en étant calme. = He worked with the children all while being calm.
  • Le lion passe l'après-midi en dormant. = The lion spent the afternoon sleeping.

To form the gerund, simply take the nous-form of the verb in the present tense, drop the -ons at the end, and add -ant.

  • faire -> nous faisons -> faisant
