Colours is the eighth (assuming read left to right) skill in the Welsh language tree with a total of four lessons. The skill teaches basic colors and a few other words like shapes and size words.
Grammar tips[]
Adjectives[]
Adjectives in Welsh come after the noun they're attached to:
- seren arian = a silver star
- sgwâr bach = a small square
Soft mutation[]
Following certain words in Welsh, there is a modification done to the first letter of the following word. In this skill, this is seen with words following the i in perthyn i (belong to), words after pa (which) and an adjective following a feminine definite noun (of which seren and hecsagon are in this skill)
- Mae'r lemon yn perthyn i Ddylan. = The lemon belongs to Dylan. (instead of Dylan)
- Pa liw ydy'r pannas? = What color are the parsnips? (instead of lliw)
- Ydy'r hecsagon fach yn las? = Is the small hexagon blue? (instead of bach and glas)
Here is a table of the changes that soft mutation causes:
Regular start | Changes to |
---|---|
p | b |
b | f |
m | f |
t | d |
d | dd |
ll | l |
rh | r |
c | g |
g | - |
A few words in this skill are also different when they are feminine. We'll learn the differences for feminine nouns in a later skill.
