Wanting is the seventh skill of the Welsh language tree. It has six lessons and its major focus is teaching new vocabulary through teaching the verb "to want."

Grammar Notes[]

Eisiau[]

Eisiau means "to want." It does not require yn before it unlike most other present tense verbs!

  • Dw i eisiau car. = I want a car.

North Welsh speakers might use the spelling isio but it is pronounced the same!

And[]

Remember that a is used for "and" except before vowels (which includes y, w and h in Welsh!), in which case it becomes ac:

  • Dw i eisiau afal ac oren. = I want an apple and an orange.

Yes and No[]

"Yes" and "no" in Welsh depend on the subject of the sentence; for example, for "I," it is ydw and nac ydw respectively.

The definite article[]

The word "the" is introduced in this skill for the first time! The word is y, but it will change to:

  • yr before vowels (like yr afal, yr hufen iâ)
  • Or 'r immediately after a vowel, even if the following word begins with a consonant:
    • Dw i'n hoffi'r sudd oren. = I like the orange juice.

With some expressions that use two nouns preceded by a definite article in English, the Welsh equivalent will have the y (or yr or 'r) in the middle:

  • the car door -> drws y car
